Why Zero Video Platform Fees Is a Big Deal for Sellers

Bifixit charges zero per-minute and per-viewer video fees, so a bigger audience never means a bigger bill for trade fair vendors.

Livestream shopping has one hidden cost most first-time sellers never budget for: the platform itself. A lot of video and livestream commerce tools charge by the minute you're broadcasting, by the number of viewers watching, or both — which means the better your slot performs, the more it can cost you just to run it. Bifixit's National LIVE Trade Fair runs on Bifixit's own self-hosted livestream infrastructure, and vendors pay zero per-minute and zero per-viewer fees. Full stop.

How per-minute and per-viewer pricing usually works against a seller

Say a livestream tool charges even a small amount per viewer-minute — a few naira, nothing dramatic on paper. Now picture a vendor who does everything right: builds hype with countdown posts, gets a great slot, and pulls in 500 concurrent viewers for a 90-minute broadcast. That's 45,000 viewer-minutes. At a rate that looked negligible in the pricing page's fine print, the bill for your best-performing slot ever can end up higher than a mediocre one — you're punished financially for exactly the outcome you were trying to achieve. Vendors on these platforms often end up watching their viewer count with dread instead of excitement.

What self-hosted infrastructure actually changes

Bifixit built and runs its own livestream infrastructure rather than reselling or metering a third-party video service. That's the difference between a platform that has to pass usage costs on to vendors and one that's absorbed that cost as part of the trade fair itself. Practically, it means:

  • A slot that gets 50 viewers costs the vendor exactly the same as a slot that gets 5,000.
  • Running longer to handle more questions and more checkouts in the moment costs nothing extra.
  • The replay that stays live and sellable after the event doesn't accrue ongoing hosting charges back to the vendor.

Doing the math on what this actually saves

Put a real number on it: a vendor paying the ₦100,000 early-bird registration fee and running two slots across the weekend, each pulling a few hundred viewers over an hour, would be looking at a meaningfully sized secondary bill under a metered model — potentially rivaling the registration fee itself once you count both slots and a healthy turnout. Under Bifixit's model, that entire secondary cost simply doesn't exist. The ₦100,000 (or ₦150,000 after 1 November) is the cost, not the starting point of a variable bill that grows with your own success.

Why this matters especially for Nigerian small vendors

Margins in Nigerian retail are already tight once you factor in sourcing costs, delivery, and currency-driven price volatility. A small vendor selling beauty products or electronics doesn't have room to absorb a metered platform fee stacked on top of everything else, and unpredictable costs make it hard to price confidently during the event itself. Zero per-minute and per-viewer fees means a vendor can go all-in on driving traffic to their slot — sharing it everywhere, encouraging viewers to stay longer, answering every comment — without doing mental math about what a bigger crowd is costing them in real time. The incentive lines up completely: more viewers is unambiguously good, with no asterisk.

The trade-off to understand

The ₦100,000 or ₦150,000 vendor registration fee is what funds the event and the infrastructure behind it — it's not a teaser rate that gets topped up later. Vendors already on Bifixit's active paid subscription plan register for free, which means the platform's existing sellers get the full trade fair experience, uncapped viewers and all, at no additional livestream cost whatsoever.

What it means for how you run your slot

Knowing there's no metered cost changes the decisions a vendor makes in the moment. Don't rush a demonstration to save time, don't cut off audience questions early, and don't hesitate to keep the stream running a little longer if engagement is still climbing — none of that costs extra on Bifixit's infrastructure. Compare that to a vendor on a metered platform quietly watching a cost counter climb in the corner of their screen while trying to close a sale, and it's clear which one is actually built for a seller to focus entirely on the product and the buyer instead of the bill.
