How Manufacturers Can Cut Out Costly Middlemen Online
How manufacturers can sell directly to retailers and buyers online, cutting out the distributor markup while still handling delivery properly.
Every layer between a manufacturer and the person who eventually pays for the product takes a cut, and most of those layers exist for one reason: someone had to solve a problem the manufacturer couldn't solve alone — finding buyers, building trust, handling payment, arranging delivery. The moment a manufacturer can solve those problems directly, the middleman's cut stops being worth paying for.
What middlemen are actually being paid for
Distributors, agents, and market-based wholesalers earn their margin doing real work: they aggregate demand from buyers a manufacturer would never individually reach, they extend credit and absorb the risk of a buyer who doesn't pay, and they physically move product into markets the manufacturer has no presence in. None of that is a scam — it's a genuine service, and for decades it was the only way a small or mid-size Nigerian manufacturer could reach a national market at all.
Which of those jobs a manufacturer can now do directly
The demand-aggregation part — finding buyers who want what you make — is the piece that's changed the most. A manufacturer with an online storefront, a shareable shop link, and visibility through a livestream can reach retailers and end buyers directly, in the same markets a distributor used to be the only route into. The payment part has changed too: a real checkout that settles straight to your verified business account removes the need for someone in the chain to collect and forward payment on your behalf.
- Demand aggregation — replaced by a storefront and livestream reach that put you in front of buyers directly.
- Payment collection — replaced by a checkout that settles to your own account, no forwarding required.
- Trust-building — replaced by a visible, verifiable online presence and, increasingly, by buyers watching your actual production on camera.
- Physical delivery — still a real job, and usually still worth paying someone to do well.
What stays true even without a middleman
Cutting out a middleman doesn't mean cutting out logistics, and manufacturers who assume it does end up promising delivery they can't fulfill. Delivery is still a genuine cost and a genuine skill — targeting realistic windows (same-city orders same day where possible, longer for orders further out) and being upfront about them matters more once you're dealing with buyers directly, because there's no longer a distributor absorbing the complaint if a delivery is late. Selling direct means owning that part of the relationship you used to be able to hand off.
Selling live removes the last excuse for the markup
The remaining argument for a middleman is usually trust: a buyer trusts the familiar distributor more than an unknown manufacturer's online shop. Livestream selling closes that gap directly. Bifixit's National LIVE Trade Fair, on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December 2026, gives manufacturers a scheduled slot to broadcast straight from the factory floor — production, quality checks, packaging — to buyers who check out in-stream without needing a distributor to vouch for you first. Watching the actual process live does the trust-building job a middleman used to be paid for.
Nigerian manufacturers with a valid CAC number get priority slot allocation, and food, cosmetics, drug, or medical device makers need their NAFDAC number in place before registering. There are zero per-minute or per-viewer platform fees, since Bifixit runs its own self-hosted livestream infrastructure, and every go-live auto-posts to Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook — free promotion that used to be another cost a middleman's distribution network provided. Registration is ₦100,000 before 1 November 2026, rising to ₦150,000 after, and free for vendors already on an active paid Bifixit subscription.
Once the event weekend ends, your shop and slot replay stay live and sellable, meaning the direct relationship you built with buyers on camera keeps generating orders without a middleman ever entering the chain.
