How Live Shopping Events Work: A Buyer's Guide
Never bought during a livestream before? Here's exactly how live shopping works, step by step, before the Bifixit National LIVE Trade Fair on 12–13…
Live shopping is not a new idea dressed up in new language. It is the trade fair table, the market stall, and the QVC broadcast, compressed into a phone screen with a buy button attached. If the concept is unfamiliar to you, this is the plain-language version of how it actually works, using the Bifixit National LIVE Trade Fair on 12–13 December 2026 as the example.
Step one: a vendor goes live at a scheduled time
Unlike a normal online store, where products sit waiting for whenever you happen to browse, live shopping runs on a schedule. A vendor books a slot, and at that time, they open a camera and start showing their stock in real time — trying on the jacket, opening the cosmetics box, demonstrating the blender. You catch it live or you catch the replay, but either way, someone is presenting the product rather than a static photo doing the talking.
Step two: you watch, and you can ask questions
Because it is genuinely live and not a looping recorded video, the chat next to the stream is a live conversation. You can ask the vendor to show the inside stitching on a bag, confirm a phone's storage size, or hold a lipstick shade next to a lighter shade for comparison. The vendor answers on camera, in real time, the way a market seller would if you asked them a question across the stall.
Step three: checkout happens without leaving the stream
This is the single biggest difference from ordinary online shopping. A buy button is attached to the product currently on screen. You tap it, the checkout completes right there, and the video keeps playing. You are never redirected to a separate site, never asked to reopen the app later to finish a purchase you started. The entire transaction, from seeing the product to owning it, happens inside one continuous experience.
Step four: payment and delivery follow normal rules
Live shopping changes how you discover and decide on a product. It does not change how payment or delivery work underneath. On Bifixit, Nigerian buyer payments settle directly, and delivery targets are 24 hours for same-city orders and up to 7 days for orders travelling further, including international ones. Whatever you buy during a livestream shows up as a normal order in your account, trackable the same way.
Why vendors sell this way at all
From the seller's side, a livestream compresses a lot of persuasion into a short window: showing scale, texture, fit, and function in ways photos cannot, while also creating a shared sense of time pressure as stock visibly runs down. For the trade fair specifically, vendors are also getting free cross-posting, every go-live moment auto-posts to Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook automatically, and Bifixit runs its own self-hosted livestream infrastructure, so there are no per-minute or per-viewer video fees eating into what they charge you.
What to expect if you have only shopped static listings before
The pacing is different. A vendor might spend four or five minutes on one item, moving through colors or sizes, before switching to the next. If you are used to scrolling a grid and deciding in seconds, live shopping asks you to slow down and watch, which usually means you get more information about the actual product before paying, not less.
A quick mental checklist for your first live shop
- Check the schedule first, so you know when your category of interest is live.
- Keep the chat open, it is your fastest way to ask a real question and get a real answer.
- Watch for stock counts the vendor calls out, since batches do sell out mid-stream.
- Remember the buy button lives inside the stream itself, not on a separate page.
Once you have done it once, the format stops feeling unusual and starts feeling like the more efficient way to shop, particularly for categories like fashion and beauty where seeing something move or blend matters.
