How Food Vendors Can Win at the Bifixit Trade Fair
You can't taste a livestream, but you can prove freshness, hygiene, and NAFDAC registration on camera. Here's how food vendors should sell live.
You can't taste or smell a livestream. That's the one real disadvantage food vendors have to work around at the Bifixit National LIVE Trade Fair on 12–13 December — everything else about the format actually favors this category, because buyers checking out in-stream are already primed by urgency and visual proof, two things food sells well on.
NAFDAC first, always
Any food product sold at the fair needs a valid NAFDAC number, no exceptions. State it clearly during your slot rather than burying it in a caption. For food specifically, Nigerian buyers are increasingly wary of unregistered sellers, so leading with your registration is one of the fastest trust-builders available to you in a category where hygiene and safety concerns are the biggest thing standing between a viewer and a purchase.
Show what taste and smell can't tell them
Since you can't transmit flavor through a screen, lean hard on everything you can show: texture when you cut or plate something, steam rising off a hot dish, the crunch of packaging opening, the color and consistency of a sauce or spice blend. If you sell a prepared or semi-prepared food, cooking a portion live — even briefly — does more to sell a batch than any description of how it tastes, because it proves freshness in real time.
Make packaging and hygiene visible, not assumed
Show how you package for delivery: sealed containers, date labels, how you keep something cold or hot until it ships. Buyers ordering food they can't inspect in person are silently checking for exactly this, and a vendor who shows it unprompted removes a hesitation that would otherwise show up as an abandoned checkout mid-stream.
Perishables and the 24-hour delivery window
Same-city delivery is targeted at 24 hours, which is workable for most perishable and prepared food — but say so explicitly during your slot, including any cutoff time for same-day dispatch versus next-day. For anything genuinely perishable, be honest on camera about which cities or delivery zones you can safely serve, rather than letting a buyer find out after they've already paid.
Sell to households, not just individuals
Family-size and bulk packs tend to outperform single-portion items in this format, because a buyer watching a live cooking or plating demonstration is often thinking about a meal for their household, not a snack for themselves. Price a bulk option clearly next to the single-portion one during your slot so the upgrade decision happens in the moment, while checkout is still open.
Lean into what's local
Regional specialties — a spice blend, a snack, a dish tied to a specific state or town — tend to do well precisely because buyers outside that area can't easily get it elsewhere. If your product has a story about where it comes from or how it's traditionally made, tell it on camera; it's the kind of detail that turns a casual viewer into someone actively looking for your shop link afterward.
Registration and slot timing
Nigerian vendors with a valid CAC business registration number get priority slot allocation, so register with your CAC and NAFDAC numbers both ready. The fee is ₦100,000 before 1 November and ₦150,000 from that date onward, free if you're already on an active paid Bifixit subscription plan. Consider requesting a slot timed around a typical meal-planning window — many food buyers shop with dinner or the weekend in mind, and a well-timed slot catches that intent directly.
Free promotion, and a replay that keeps selling
Your go-live moment auto-posts to Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook automatically the second you start streaming, at no cost to you. And because your shop and slot replay stay live and sellable after the event ends, a strong live cooking or plating segment keeps working as proof of freshness and quality long after the trade fair weekend is over.
