Countdown Marketing: Building Hype Before a Big Sales Event
A single sale-coming-soon post rarely moves anyone. Here's how to build a countdown that turns anticipation into real sales on the day.
A single sale-coming-soon post rarely moves anyone to act, because there's nothing specific to hold onto — no date to circle, no reason to check back. Countdown marketing works because it breaks anticipation into small, repeated moments instead of one announcement, and it's a genuinely useful tool for any vendor building toward the Bifixit National LIVE Trade Fair on 12–13 December.
Why a countdown beats a single announcement
One post, however well designed, competes with everything else in a feed for a single moment of attention. A countdown gives you multiple, smaller moments spread across weeks — each one a fresh chance to be seen by someone who missed the last one, and each one reinforcing the date a little further into a follower's memory until it feels less like an ad and more like a fact they already know.
Pick milestone days, not a vague sense of soon
Post at specific intervals rather than randomly: 30 days out, 14 days out, 7 days, 3 days, 1 day, and the morning of. Each of these has a different job. Thirty days out is about awareness — most of your audience doesn't know yet. Fourteen and seven days out are about planning — this is when people actually check their calendars. Three days and one day out are about urgency, the point where thinking about it needs to turn into setting a reminder.
Give each milestone post a different angle
Don't repeat the same graphic with a different number on it. At 30 days, introduce what you're bringing and why this event specifically. At 14 days, start naming actual products or bundles you'll feature. At 7 days, share your confirmed slot time. At 3 days and 1 day, create real urgency — a specific unit count, a specific first-come benefit, or a reminder that checkout happens inside the stream itself so there's no separate step to forget.
Specificity beats vague excitement every time
A vague announcement that something big is coming gets scrolled past. A specific post naming your slot time, the exact restock you're bringing, and a first-order benefit gets remembered, because it gives a follower something concrete to act on later — a time to block out, a product to want. The more specific your countdown posts get as the date approaches, the more they function as an actual plan rather than just hype.
Use scarcity honestly
Countdown marketing works best paired with real scarcity — a genuinely limited restock, a bundle only available during your slot, a discount that actually ends when the fair does. Manufactured urgency that isn't true tends to erode trust fast, especially with buyers who've been sold fake countdowns before; real constraints, such as your actual stock level or the actual two-day window of the fair itself, do the same job honestly.
Use the countdown assets already made for you
Bifixit provides registered trade fair vendors with countdown assets as part of their creative promotional materials, alongside event graphics and caption templates — numbered day-count graphics designed to be posted on this exact schedule. Post the seven-day, three-day, and one-day graphics on their actual corresponding day rather than batching them together, since the spacing is the entire point of a countdown.
The final 48 hours matter most
Most of your actual conversions from a countdown campaign happen in the last two days before the event, not the first two weeks — the early posts build awareness, but the late posts convert it into action. Make sure your one-day and morning-of posts include your exact slot time, a direct reminder that your shop and slot replay stay live after the fair too so late viewers aren't afraid they've missed everything, and a clear call to actually show up and watch.
