CAC Registration Explained for Nigerian Trade Fair Vendors

If you're a Nigerian vendor planning to go live at the Bifixit National LIVE Trade Fair on 12–13 December 2026, your CAC registration number is more than paperwork — it's what moves you up the queue for prime broadcast slots. Bifixit gives priority slot allocation to vendors with a valid Corporate Affairs Commission registration, so the sooner you sort this out, the better your chances of landing a Saturday evening slot instead of a Sunday 9am one nobody's awake for.

What CAC registration actually covers

The Corporate Affairs Commission is Nigeria's official business registry. Registering with CAC gives your business a legal identity separate from you as an individual — a registration number, a certificate, and a name nobody else can legally trade under. For trade fair purposes, Bifixit uses this number to verify you're a real, traceable Nigerian business before handing you priority placement, because buyers checking out mid-stream need to trust that the seller behind the camera is accountable.

Business Name vs Limited Liability Company

Most vendors selling at a trade fair don't need a full limited liability company (Ltd). A registered Business Name (BN) is enough, faster to process, and cheaper. Here's the practical difference:

• Business Name (BN): Suited to sole proprietors and small partnerships. Filing fee is roughly ₦10,000–₦15,000 through a CAC-accredited agent, and approval typically lands within 24–72 hours if your proposed name is available and your documents are clean.
• Limited Liability Company (Ltd): Needed if you want shareholders, limited personal liability, or you're already operating at a scale where separating personal and business assets matters. Costs more (from around ₦40,000 upward depending on share capital) and takes longer to process.

For a first-time trade fair vendor selling fashion, beauty products, or home goods, a Business Name registration is almost always the right call. You can always upgrade to Ltd later once the business outgrows it.

How to actually register before the deadline

You can file directly through the CAC's own portal (cac.gov.ng) or, faster in practice, through a CAC-accredited agent who already has portal access and won't get stuck on name-availability searches. The steps are the same either way:

• Search and reserve your proposed business name (this alone can save you days if your first-choice name is taken).
• Submit your means of identification (National ID, international passport, or voter's card) and a passport photograph.
• Provide your business address and a brief description of what you sell.
• Pay the filing fee and wait for your certificate and registration number.

Because the early-bird vendor rate closes on 1 November 2026, don't leave CAC registration until the week you plan to register for the fair. A rejected name search or a missing ID scan can cost you days you don't have if you're trying to lock in the ₦100,000 rate before it jumps to ₦150,000.

Why this matters more at a livestream trade fair than a regular market

At a physical market, nobody asks to see your CAC certificate before you set up a stall. At a livestream event where buyers are paying in-stream without ever meeting you in person, that registration number is doing the trust-building work a physical storefront would normally do. It's also how Bifixit allocates the limited number of prime broadcast slots fairly — vendors with verified CAC numbers go first, then remaining slots fill from the rest of the registration queue.

If you sell food, beauty, or medical items

CAC registration alone isn't the finish line if your category is regulated. Vendors selling food, cosmetics, drugs, or medical devices also need a valid NAFDAC number on top of their CAC registration — the two documents cover different things and Bifixit checks for both where applicable.

What international vendors do instead

If you're registering from outside Nigeria, you're not required to have a CAC number — international vendors can still register for the trade fair. You simply won't get the same priority slot allocation that Nigerian CAC-registered vendors receive, since that priority system exists specifically to favor local, verifiable businesses.

Common mistakes that slow the process down

A few avoidable errors account for most of the delays vendors run into:

• Submitting a name that's already taken. Do a preliminary name search yourself before paying an agent, so you're not paying twice for a rejected reservation.
• Mismatched ID details. If the name on your ID doesn't match exactly what you type into the application (a missing middle name, a different spelling), expect a rejection and a resubmission cycle.
• Using a residential address that changes before your certificate arrives. Registration correspondence goes to the address on file, so use one you'll actually be reachable at for the next few weeks.
• Assuming registration is instant. Even a clean application takes a few working days to clear. Treat that as the floor, not the ceiling, when you're working backward from the 1 November early-bird deadline.

None of these are complicated to avoid, but each one, left unchecked, can turn a two-day process into a two-week one — exactly the kind of delay you don't want to be dealing with as the vendor registration window narrows.
